A couple of weeks ago I participated in a Career Day at an Elementary School in Grand Prairie. I was assigned to 5 classes of grades 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders. I shared with the kids about what it is like to work at a Court and for a Judge. They weren't prepared for what I had to share. I talked about Juvenile Criminal Cases. The kids were surprised to hear that they could get in trouble with the law by skipping school and being tardy to class. The kiddos were really sweet and many of them were unfortunately too aware of my discussion because they had older siblings that had been to Court for Truancy. One boy confused he had opened the mail addressed to The Parents of (name of sibling) and they hid the letter from their parents so the older sibling wouldn't get into trouble. After I explained the Parents would get into big trouble for not showing up to Court this kid said he was scared and would I call his parents for him. It was kind of cute how he was so scared. I told him I would not call his parents that he had to tell them. Many of the kids asked a lot of questions. But the one most asked question was "HOW MUCH MONEY DOES THE JUDGE MAKE? " Yesterday I received a vary large envelope at work and in it was 20 Thank You notes written by the kids. Some of the best comments were:
Being a Judge has to ROCK. I might want to become a Judge someday.
Thank you for showing us the gable. (gavel spelled incorrectly)
Thank you for coming to our school. I watch Judge Joe Brown on Fox 4 when I am home.
Can you bring Judge Judy next time you come to our school?
Thank you for being everything you could.
Thank you for bringing the gavale (spelled incorrectly) the big book and the robe. I hope you liked our class Justice is Saved.
These made me smile. Kids are so cute. Here is a picture of some of the cards they made for me. I really like the one of me. I had worn my black suit with black shoes that day. Good likeness of me I think.
